I thought a cautionary tale might be a little fun this week. All names are of course changed, but this was one of our funniest move disasters from early days.
From the hills of Scotland to the plains of Germany.
In about June 2000 a whole bunch of us moved from Scotland out to Germany. We were only recently married and didn’t really know what was going on or how to prepare – nor as it turned out were our friends.
Unlike now, 3 teenage children and a dog later, in those days we didn’t even fill half our allocation in the lorry. Packing seemed pretty straight forward and quick. What went in, came out 7 days later. Job done.
Our first married house move
My husband and I headed out to Germany a few days before our friends. Having unpacked and got our first little house all ready, our friends came to stay for a few days before their lorry arrived. 20 years ago, we very much benefitted from the Deutschmark being so strong and allowances for being abroad. We felt flush with cash – those were the days! We celebrated our arrival and the beginning of the adventure by introducing ourselves to the local food and beverage. In particular we had discovered a delight called Kwai Feh – a lychee liqueur! Don’t judge, we were young!

Kwai Feh anyone?
Fishy Friday?
At 8am the following morning, the removal company arrived with our friends’ belongings, to unpack. First out the back of the lorry was the fridge. We soon discovered, that one of the key preparations, pre-move, is to empty and clean the fridge before moving. Not allow it to be transported, in summer, for 7 days, with the contents still in. The fish had not survived the journey. Nor did the delicate stomach of the friend who discovered it. His wife, luckily, had not yet made it out of bed.
