I sometime feel like organising a family holiday is a like a miniature house move in itself.

Holidays are often one of the few occasions where the family can find time to sit down together and make plans, such as for a downsize or relocation. With a little pre-planning all round it can be (relatively!) hassle free. Here are my top tips for a stress free family break, to help you to make the most of your time together.

1. Make a list of things to pack and do before you go.

If you are anything like me, I now find I need lists to remember anything. I think when you are juggling job/home/family/pets, your mind can not remember everything. My children tell me it’s an age thing – I think the older you get, the more you already have in your brain, the less space you have spare and therefore a list means less to forget!

2. Be efficient with your packing.

Compression bags are handy for space saving – whilst plastic bags are an environmental “no”, more robust bags can be used time and time again. They also make handy dividers for storing clothes whilst you are away.

Plan ahead for access to a washing machine. As well as coping with unforeseen emergencies, it also means you can pack lighter and save on those depressing heaps of dirty clothes when you get home…

3. Avoid the fear of being overweight…

Weigh your suitcase before you get to the airport, either using a weighing device or, as I do, with yourself on the bathroom scales – a terrifying moment when you have to see your participation in kg in the process!

4. Make your suitcase recognisable.

We have tartan ribbons on our luggage handles – as well as avoiding lost bags a bit of tartan always breaks the ice.

5. Avoid taking luggage altogether.

By which I don’t mean taking nothing at all! However, companies such as Send My Bag specialise in moving your case from A to B. This may be a good option for bulky items (such as golf clubs) or if you’re also travelling with young children and pets! Of course, it’s important to check delivery logistics, as well as company credibility and reviews.

6. Download your favourite film.

Download any music, films, podcasts and books before you travel. Not only is it space and time efficient but it saves disappointment and family feuds if the Wifi signal lets you down.

7. Check out self-catering holiday facilities ahead of time.

Find out if the host is able to leave a “welcome” pack of basics, or alternatively book a local supermarket home delivery, for your arrival.

Local caterers, farm stores and delicatessens often sell fresh, locally made pre-cooked meals – this saves buying in (and having to cook!) large amounts of raw ingredients, so more time with the family, and potentially less food wastage at the end of the holiday.

8. Also check out the local services.

It may seem needlessly paranoid but make sure you find out ahead where the nearest services such as doctor and pharmacy are located – including any restricted opening hours. Your holiday venue should also provide you with an emergency contact number for any problems.

9. Look after your own house.

Consider investing in a house sitter to look after your house while you are away, to water plants and open and close the curtains each day. As well as offering peace of mind this also means not coming back to a sad looking house, at the end of your amazing holiday.

All going well this will result in a stress free family break! Once you’re home, contact me for an initial, no obligation chat about your decluttering or house moving plans.
