I don’t want to say, well that was a lovely summer, but being Scottish, we are always rather pessimistic about the weather. If last week was Summer, it was a fantastic 10 days. And, as a true Brit, when the sun shines, we all headed to the beach. Heading to the beach in Scotland means packing for sun/sea/sand/wind/rain….but remaining optimistic (definitely bring a jumper at least).

Our absolutely favourite and go to beach, about an hour from the centre of Edinburgh, is Seacliff Beach – 4 miles east of North Berwick on the A198. With stunning views of Tantallon Castle, the Bass Rock and a distant Fife, it rarely disappoints – only a northerly wind may cause you to seek elsewhere. Loved by surfers, dog-walkers, picnickers, paddle boarders, rock poolers and horse riders, it provides a perfect setting for a day of fresh sea air. Even on a Saturday, at 20 degrees (summer temperatures), in the Easter hols, it’s quietly busy – we had to share the beach, but in no way were feeling encroached! No one had to pitch their picnic blanket in front of us. Think Brighton in winter.

Amenities – there are toilets and a carpark in a field. Do not expect life guards, donkeys and ice cream vans. You will find yourself turning onto the track by the farm buildings and riding stables and bumping down a private track towards the sea. Look left and spot the Bass Rock, and you’ll understand the draw. Do be aware that there is now a £5 charge to park, but the barrier is not always working – card or cash payment.

Once on the beach, if you have small people, head right towards the rock pools. If you head all the way left, and clamber over the rocks, you will discover the old Seacliff Harbour, blasted out of the. red sandstone cliffs in 1890. Previously used by fishing boats, it is now a great spot for the brave divers and jumpers!
