Clifton Hall School

Our walk around the delightfully green campus enhanced the deception of being far from the Big City madding crowd.

Thank you to Tom and Jo for my tour round the school, and their detailed insights into their lives at Clifton Hall. Our walk took us through the main building with its Scottish Baronial grandeur – designed by celebrated architect David Bryce in the late 19th century.

Whilst deftly positioned between the M8 to Glasgow and the M9 to Stirling/Perth/Fife, and only 12 miles from Edinburgh city centre, Clifton Hall is perfect for commuting or local parents on the Western side of the capital

What’s new?

Jill Drummond has recently taken over as the new head, having been teaching and working in the school since 2008. A large new Games Hall has transformed PE provision – indoor access being essential in Scotland – and doubles up as a theatre venue whilst planning is sought for that next project.

Academics

Accolades galore for the nursery and Junior School, the Senior school continues to follow the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence. Clifton Hall pride themselves on their SEND provision, focusing on willingness to work and try hard rather than academic results. A belief in investing in each child, and building them into confident individuals who have a positive attitude to learning. The choice of Highers may not be as broad as other schools, but they try to accommodate the choices of each child, with a view that if not in L6th, subjects can be taken in U6th.

The normal array of sports are on offer, with after school clubs adding to the choice. Pool on site. Strong on art and drama, with the hope of the new theatre arriving soon. Trips with societies and clubs at all ages, John Muir Award, Duke of Edinburgh. Clifton Hall’s has joined 5 other schools in Scotland that participate in the FIDA (Future Institute at Dollar Academy) International Sustainability Diploma. A program for learners focused on sustainability and the environment, that equates to a Higher.
