George Watson’s College

A large thriving day school, full of opportunities and community engagement.

Thank you to Jenny McGill for a wonderful tour round the school, and some great insights into the workings and ethos of George Watson’s College. Our walk around the campus took us through new modern learning hubs, old creaking libraries, shiny pre-school and music blocks and all with the sunny Pentland hills in the background. One of the greatest benefits of Edinburgh city are the views – a constant visual reminder for us to look up and out. The school has a wonderful single site 52 acre campus, nestled between the affluent Edinburgh communities of Merchiston and Morningside. 2.5 miles from the city centre and 5 miles from the Pentlands, Watson’s is perfectly placed to take advantage of the city and surroundings. George Watson’s College is a large co-educational day school, serving the south of Edinburgh city.

General info

The school consists of Pre-school (3-5 yrs), Junior (5-12yrs) and Senior School (12-18yrs). Total roll call is about 900 pupils in Junior and 1400 in Senior. Fees vary depending on age, and are all inclusive other than uniform, laptops, lunch, music lessons and trips. Non selective admission, National 5’s, Highers and Advanced Highers.

What’s new?

The head of school for a start. Lisa Kerr joined Watson’s in September 2024 from Gordonstoun School. I’m not sure you could have chosen two more contrasting schools within Scotland! The new wing of the Junior School finally had its Covid delayed opening in 2020, brand new strength and conditioning room in Sports block and planning has gone in for 2 more Astro pitches.

Academics

George Watson’s are known for academic excellence, but are keen to impress the importance of getting the best out of each individual child being a non-selective school. Each child is assessed when they join, to see where they are and what gaps there may be. They are known for their strong SEND department, and try to support and educate all the children that join. With over 200 children in each year group they are able to offer a huge array of subjects.

Sports, creative arts,events

Very strong on rugby, with links to Watsonians Rugby Club, but many sports from curling to fencing are covered – girls cricket is particularly popular. There are over 20 choirs, major theatre productions, orchestras and recitals, along with other societies. There are major all year group camps in the last 4 years of primary and S1&3. CCF has returned after popular demand.
